Library Commons

The Library Commons is designed to foster recruitment, retention and academic success.  It includes collaborative study spaces, increased seating, and improved data and electrical connectivity.  The spaces are ideal for students, staff, and faculty group study and team projects.  Please review the information below to determine which space most adequately meets the needs of your group. 

Group Study Rooms

The Thomas G. Carpenter Library houses 20 group study rooms throughout the building.  These rooms provide workspace for group study and collaborative work.

Available Equipment:

    • Dry erase markers available for checkout on the first floor.

Reservation Policies:

  • Study rooms can be reserved up to one week in advance by groups of two or more current UNF students, faculty and staff.
  • Students may reserve up to three (3) hours per day and up to nine (9) hours per week. Blocks may be reserved sequentially up to the three (3) hour maximum.
  • Reservations must be confirmed within 15 minutes or the reservation will be forfeited.  After reserving a room, an email will be sent to your UNF email account with the confirmation link.

 

 

 

Media:Scapes/Collaborative Workstations

The Library Commons is equipped with several types of Media:Scape tables specifically designed to support collaborative group work.

Table Types

  • 3 D-shaped tables seating up to 6 at bar height with two 32" screens attached are located on the west side of the 2nd floor.  The dual monitor tables can be reserved up to one week in advance by groups of two or more UNF students, faculty and staff. 
  • 2 D-shaped tables seating up to 6 at bar height with one 42" screen attached are located on the west side of the 2nd floor.  These tables are available on a first come, first served basis.
  • 2 mobile stations with one 42" display accommodating up to 4 connections are available on the 1st and 2nd floors.  The mobile stations are available on a first come, first served basis.

Connections

  • Up to 6 devices, such as laptops and tablets, can be connected to a Media:Scape using a PUCK (Personal User Control Key)
  • Connection types includes -
    • HDMI
    • VGA
    • Mini DisplayPort to VGA adapter (Apple) - check out at Access Services desk on the first floor with Osprey1 Card
    • Lightning to VGA adapter - check out at Access Services desk on the first floor with Osprey1 Card
    • Micro HDMI to VGA adapter - check out at Access Services desk on the first floor with Osprey1 Card

Library Graduate Study Rooms

A limited number of graduate study rooms are available to currently enrolled doctoral students, thesis-writing graduate students, and graduate students on an annual basis.

Application Requirements:

  • Applicants must be currently enrolled doctoral students, thesis-writing graduate students, or graduate students.
  • Applications are accepted until the end of the first week of classes.
  • Only completed applications will be considered.
Library Graduate Study Room Application (available August 1-25)

Library Graduate Study Room Approval Process:

  • Successful applicants will be notified via UNF email approximately one week after add/drop.
  • Successful applicants must pick up their intellikey request form in the Library Administration Office (12/2400).
  • Keys are issued by the campus locksmith (6/1206).
  • Keys must be picked up within one week of the award date or the graduate study room will be re-assigned to another applicant.

Library Collaborative Spaces

Thomas G. Carpenter Library is committed to faculty, staff, and student success at the University of North Florida. Use of collaborative spaces within our physical facilities is for educational purposes only and these guidelines are offered to help us maximize their use and assist our users in satisfying their teaching and learning needs.

Laptops

The library has Dell laptops and Macbook Pros available for use in the building.

  • Available for three-hour loan, with renewal.
  • Available to students, faculty and staff with a valid Osprey1 Card.
  • Require completion of a Laptop Checkout Acknowledgement form accepting liability once per calendar year.
  • Can be checked at Access Services desk on the first floor.
  • Can not leave the building.

Texas Instruments TI-84 Plus Graphing Calculators

Scientific Calculators

Basic 4-function Calculators

  • Available for three-hour loan, with renewal.
  • Available to students, faculty and staff with a valid Osprey1 Card.
  • Can be checked at Access Services desk on the first floor.
  • Can leave the building.

Scantron

Scantron sheets are available for purchase in the vending machine located on the first floor.

A scantron test scanner is available for faculty and staff use on the first floor of the library near the Research Desk.  This machine will take GREEN, BLUE, PURPLE and BROWN scantrons. 

  • Models: ES 2800 and 888p+

Scantron machines are also located in other buildings on campus.

CIRT scantron machine will only take the PINK parscore scantrons.

CCB scantron machine will take GREEN scantrons.

  • Model: 888P+
  • Decal: 32374

BCH (Clinical and Applied Movement Sciences) machine will take GREEN and PINK scantrons.  The machine in BCH was purchased by BCH; because of this they have an agreement that this machine is only to be used by professors in this college unless the scantron in the library breaks.

Psychology machine will take GREEN and PINK scantrons.  Psychology purchased this machine and maintains an on-site support agreement.

Scanners are available on the first, second and third floors and can be used at no charge.

Epson Perfection V200 Photo scanners

  • Located on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd floors
  • No charge
  • Scan documents, photos, books, slides, negatives
  • Scans 8 1/2 x 11
  • 4800 dpi
  • One-touch scan, email, copy, and scan to PDF buttons

Epson GT-20000 Document Scanner

  • Located on the 3rd floor in the microform room.
  • No charge
  • Scans 11 x 17 (2 page spread)
  • 600 x 1200 dpi 

Scanned documents should be saved to cloud storage or a flash drive or sent via email.
