Death Tolls With "DeathTolls Experience," up-and-coming Iranian virtual reality artist Ali Eslami is seeking to resensitize the general public to the reality behind the abstract statistics on the hundreds of thousands of deaths in the Middle East. When news media bombard us with facts and figures every day, they gradually lose their emotional urgency. Eventually, our brains automatically filter out this dry “data reality,” even though it is crying out for our attention. The war in Syria is a good example. Eslami takes this psychological effect as the starting point for an investigation of how virtual reality can not only restore empathy, but also provide a context to news reports.

Missouri-Heart of The Nation Virtual Reality Exhibition

The museum of art and archeology at the University of Missouri preserves a collection of artworks that allows us a remarkable glance of Missouri in the mid 20th century. This collection was commissioned by the owners of the former St. Louis department store Scruggs-Vandervoort-Barney. In 1946 to 1947, they hired 14 artists to travel across Missouri to depict the natural beauties, industrial activities, and cultural characteristics of the state. The artists produced almost 100 paintings, watercolors, and drawings. The patrons named their collection "Missouri - Heart of the Nation" and it toured the state as a special exhibition for three years. In 1950, the department store donated the collection to the University of Missouri, and in honor of the Missouri Bicentennial, we present this entire collection in the modern format of a virtual reality exhibition.

Al Zubarah

It covers the remains of a walled coastal town that once ranked as one of the Gulf’s most important pearl diving and trading centres with links extending to the Indian Ocean. The fort houses a visitor’s centre. According to UNESCO, Al Zubarah was one of a long line of prosperous trading towns around the coast in what is present day Qatar. UNESCO said “Al Zubarah bears a unique testimony to the human interaction with both the sea and the harsh desert environment of the region. Pearl divers’ weights, imported ceramics, depictions of dhows, fish traps, wells and agricultural activity show how the town’s development was driven by trade and commerce, and how closely the town’s inhabitants were connected with the sea and their desert hinterland.”

Teacher's Lens Beta

Teacher's Lens Beta is an Oculus Launch Pad winning project that strives to mitigate unconscious bias in classroom education. This is the first virtual reality app to translate the Harvard Implicit Association Test (IAT) into a game play simulation. Future iterations will include game training modules using proven methods in immersive experiences shown to reduce social biases. Decades of research have revealed that teacher expectations on student directly correlate to student performance with long term impacts on education, career, and overall life trajectory. Unfortunately, research also shows that teachers systematically have lower expectations of female and students of color. When these biases are left unchecked, consequences impact the STEM pipelines and "School to Prison" Pipelines. Traditional methods of diversity training have been largely proven to be ineffective. Debias VR believes VR technology has capacity more effectively approach measurable, debiasing solutions.
