Allen Lastinger Center for Florida History

The Allen Lastinger Center for Florida History's collection is made up of rare and unique primary and secondary source material.  For this reason, we have rules governing how materials are handled, to reduce the wear and tear on them, so that they may be available for future researchers. We ask that you please view the following policies, and reach out with any questions or concerns.

Reading Room Policy

  • Briefcases, purses, backpacks, umbrellas, coats, and other personal belongings must be placed in the designated cubbies.
  • No food, gum, candy, or drink is permitted in the center.
  • Silence all electronic devices.
  • Visitors will be asked to wash their hands before handling materials.
  • Pencils only.
  • Materials may not be transferred from one researcher to another.
  • Materials may not be leaned on, written on top of, or have objects placed on top of them. Supports and weights are available as necessary.
  • All bound material must be used with a book cradle.
  • The Allen Lastinger Center for Florida History staff reserves the right to inspect personal materials used in the reading room before they leave the premises.
  • Some manuscript materials may be governed by special restrictions, including the physical condition of the manuscript.
  • Researchers using manuscript collections will be limited to one box or envelope at a time.
  • Manuscripts must be maintained by the reader in the order in which they are received. If errors of arrangement or identification are noted, please inform the librarian.
  • Gloves must be worn when handling photographic material and objects.
  • Additional materials will not be paged during your visit.

Personal Photography Policy

The Allen Lastinger Center for Florida History allows researchers to use their own cameras to photograph items in the center’s collection for personal reference and research purposes only. Images are not for publication. Photos may not be taken of staff or other researchers.  Researchers who require images for publication or broadcast must email lib-alcfh@unf.edu.

Personal photography in the center is subject to the following conditions to maintain the integrity and safe-keeping of our materials:

● Permission from staff on duty in the reading room is required before beginning any photography.

● Personal photography may be denied because of the physical condition of the material, donor restrictions, disruption to other researchers using the reading room, or at the discretion of library staff. Photography of substantial portions of manuscript collections or books may also be denied.

● No camera flash, laptop cameras, scanners, tripods, special lighting, or extra equipment are permitted.  Please make sure your camera's sound is turned off.

● Items must be kept flat, in order, within the folder; protective sleeves may not be removed from documents; bound items must be kept in cradles; and materials may not be manipulated to produce a better image.

● The researcher accepts full responsibility for determining whether copyright law protects the materials being photographed.

● For social media posts, please cite the item and tag us @unflibrary.  Please follow our citation guidelines here.

Reproduction Policy

  • Reproduction requests are considered on a case-by-case basis, and depend upon an item’s size, condition, copyright, and relevant donor restrictions.

  • Reproduction does not imply an authorization for publication or further reproduction.

  • Reproductions will be provided as a digital file only.

  • The provided citation must be used.

Please contact lib-alcfh@unf.edu for details on publishing from the collection.
