Thomas G. Carpenter Library Collection Development Policy

Deselection of Materials

The deselection of materials from the collection (sometimes referred to as “weeding”), is an integral process for ensuring the relevance, currency, and accessibility of the library’s physical collections and allows sufficient space for the addition of new acquisitions.

Candidates for deselection or withdrawal may include:

  • Material that is superseded by newer, revised, or updated editions.
  • Obsolete formats if the content is available elsewhere.
  • Material that is damaged or in poor condition.
  • Titles with low circulation or that have never circulated in this century.

If worn or damaged materials cannot be repaired, the library will determine whether the item should be replaced, and if so, the best method of replacement. This may include the acquisition of an alternate/later edition or a different format.

Materials deselected from the library's collections are removed in compliance with State of Florida regulations and institutional procedures
