What is a Library Guide (LibGuide)?

This guide will provide the definition of the library guide. Additionally, this guide will differentiate between the types of library guides and why students and faculty should use them.

Strategies for Using Library Guides

Students, instructors, researchers, and the general public may benefit by using UNF library guides.  This page will focus on how students and faculty can use library guides effectively for personal growth and instruction.

Strategies for Using Library Guides

Students can use library guides to acclimate themselves to college-level research. Students with varying research knowledge will benefit by knowing UNF library guides. They will feel more confident as a scholar knowing when and how to locate UNF library guides and other college/university library guide information.

Library guides are free for anyone to browse. You do not need UNF authentication to read our university library guides. Therefore, you are invited to browse library guides prior to attending UNF. Start with general information library guides and then move to topic and subject information. The general guides will provide you with an overview of library policies and activities whereas the topic and subject guides will prepare you for starting basic research. Other guides will prepare you for signing up for research tools such as RefWorks, a citation management tool. The UNF librarians created a Tutorials library guide to introduce new students to searching and using tools and resources effectively. Library guides can act as tools for preparing for research or as remedial tools when feeling overwhelmed. Professors may use library guides for direct instruction and as a student, you may have noticed that a library guide is linked in each online Canvas course.

If you are an instructor, you should teach students about library guides. They are the hidden gems to each college/university library! Instructors can link to library guides and use specific guides for direct instruction. Additionally, you can point to library guides when you see students struggle with citation or using library databases. By default the Student Resources library guide is included into each Canvas course module for students to access information about the UNF library. However, some instructors request to switch the student guide to a subject specific guide when it best serves the students in the course. For example, some nursing professors request the Nursing library guide to act as the default guide in each nursing course they teach. Contact an online learning librarian to change library guides in your Canvas course(s). Furthermore, do not hesitate to reach out to your UNF librarians to request a new library guide or to make a suggestion for enhancing preexisting ones.
