This guide covers the library resources central to identifying impact factors that can be used in the narrative of a promotion and tenure dossier.  It is important to remember that there is no one size fits all approach to metricsSCImago Journal & Country Rank across disciplines. Use the information that documents the impact you want to demonstrate.

Glossary of Metrics

Term Definition
Acceptance Rate Number of manuscripts accepted for publication relative to the number submitted within the last year. Calculation varies among journals.
Altmetrics Report Overview of where and how often articles are mentioned online. Article mentions are counted for each outlet and the median number is found. Demonstrates how much online attention an average article is receiving.
CCI (Cabell's Classification Index) Journal ranking system based on subject. Each subject in a journal has its own percentage score built with citation data. Demonstrates how much influence a journal has in a field of study.
CiteScore Average number of citations received in a calendar year by all items published in that journal in the preceding three years.
CiteScore Percentile & Rank Source’s rank and percentile for each subject category it belongs to.
Cites Per Document Average citations per document over a given period. Calculated considering citations received in the current year for documents published in prior years.

Difficulty of Acceptance A ranking based on acceptance rates and subject-specific citation data. Demonstrates how challenging it is to publish in a journal within a given field.
h-index (researcher) The number of publications (h) with at least h citations each. Time-dependent and varies by source. Example: 6 publications with ≥ 6 citations → h-index = 6. Learn more.
h-index (journal) h articles in that publication have been cited at least h times each.
h5-index h-index calculated for articles published in the last five complete calendar years.
i10-index Number of papers with ≥ 10 citations.
Journal Impact Factor Frequency with which an average article from a journal is cited in a particular year.
Quartile Ranking Quotient of a journal’s rank within a category and the total number of journals in that category (X / Y = Z).
  • Q1: 0.0 < Z < 0.25
  • Q2: 0.25 < Z < 0.5
  • Q3: 0.5 < Z < 0.75
  • Q4: 0.75 < Z
Some sources display only the best quartile for journals appearing in multiple categories.
SJR (SCImago Journal Rank) Average number of weighted citations received in the selected year by documents published in the previous three years. Citation weighting depends on the subject field and prestige of the citing journal.
SNIP (Source Normalized Impact per Paper) Measures actual citations received relative to expected citations for the journal’s subject field.
