Books for Historical Research

The Thomas G. Carpenter Library houses and subscribes to over 1.5 million books.  All books can be found in OneSearch, however OneSearch also houses millions of other resources and books can be difficult to find sometimes.

Here are a few pointers:

  • Search OneSearch by your topic, or by title.
    • When viewing your results, use the Resource Type limit in the left hand column to narrow to Books.
    • If you are looking only for print books in our collection, open Availability and check the box for Available On Shelf
    • If you would like to see eBooks only, open Availability and check the box for Available online
  • Items in academic libraries are arranged using the Library of Congress Classification System. Library catalogs use Library of Congress Subject Headings.
    • When scrolling through the results list, notice the subject headings listed under the title- If a subject term is different than the term you originally used, considering changing your search terms to official subject headings. Examples are provided below.

LC Subject Heading search examples

Each of the linked Library of Congress Subject Headings below will execute a subject heading search in OneSearch.  After completing your initial search, be sure to look at the full record to see the subject headings attached to the resource.  Also look at the facets on the left for other subject heading ideas and limiters through which you may target your search.
