Concept Mapping

Concept mapping is a visual way to organize your thoughts in the beginning stages of question formation and research.  Begin with a large sheet of paper and colored markers.  In a circle in the center of the page, write your topic.  Write down everything that comes to mind when you ask where, what, who, and when questions such as:

What was the cultural context for this piece, movement, etc.?

When did the movement's influence spread?

Who was influenced by this movement, piece, etc.?

What sources of inspiration did the artist draw from?

Use different colors of markers to show relationships between questions and concepts.
